Instrument Cases with RFID

A few weeks back, I mentioned that the ability to track an instrument with GPS would be a great way to assist finding stolen instruments.

Through a recent announcement from Acoustic Music Works, I have learned that Calton mandolin cases (also on Facebook) include an RFID chip, which can be registered with law enforcement for instrument identification. While identification doesn’t make stolen instruments traceable while they are missing (I keep thinking, “Find my iPhone”), it at least helps get recovered instruments back to their owner.

To take things one step further, image a world where all instruments and their cases had embedded RFID chips: A store selling used instruments could scan each instrument prior to sale to confirm that the seller is indeed the owner, and that they are not selling a stolen instrument.
