Well, finally the day has come where I can stop using my Hotmail account. This afternoon, I hopped on Google to see if ralford.net was showing up anywhere and I noticed a link to Gmail Beta. In the description, I read the words "gigabyte" and "free" so I figured why the hell not.

I'm pretty impressed with the features, but there isn't much that I don't like about Google. As you might have guessed, the concept behind Gmail is built around searching. With a gigabyte of space, there's no reason to delete email that isn't spam. Like many other email programs, emails can be assigned to categories. However, instead of deleting an old email when it becomes meaningless, it may be archived so you can dig it up later with the search feature. I suppose part of this depends upon the habits of the user. I don't recall ever trashing old email in my Hotmail account, but it was always a bitch finding a needle in the haystack.

After browsing around for an account registration link so I could show a friend, I stumbled into the About Gmail page which mentions: "We're currently only offering Gmail as part of a preview release and limited test. We don't have details on when Gmail will be made more widely available, as that depends in part on the results of the test.".

Looks like I may be one of a lucky few. But don't worry, after fiddling around in Gmail I found a box labeled "Invite A Friend". In parentheses, it read "50 left".
