The Astraka-Tymfi mountain refuge is a 3 hour hike into the mountains from Mikro Papingo, Greece. Resting on the saddle of the ridge between the peaks of Astraka (in the background) and Lapatos — with Mikro Papingo and the valley of Lake Xeroloutsa in the adjacent valleys — the building resides along the national O3 trail which circles around much of the Vikos-Aoös National Park. Its location is also an intersection for other trails which lead to the peaks of Astraka and Gamila, as well as Drakolimni Lake. The refuge stays open through the summer season and offers hikers and climbers a place to purchase a warm meal and spend the night between adventures. This photo was taken on May 11th, opening day of the refuge for the 2016 season. Moments after I took the photo, the refuge manager and his helper finished their ascent from below with six pack horses carrying their supplies for the week ahead.
